Balanced on paper

Anyone who estimates earthwork knows the balance holds until the site investigation lands, and it lands late. The earth you counted on for embankment now goes off-site, and nobody has a day to cross the borings against the cut and fill.

One case on our Try page: an Earthwork Schedule that balanced, and a PSI received after award. Yesper set the borings against the cut and fill by segment. The surplus became a 2,940 CY shortage in the base case. No pay item covers the contaminated soil, so the change order comes to a potential $823,000.

The shortage and the missing pay item show up before the first load leaves, and the notice to the Engineer carries the quantities. Same for the jobs beside it on the Try page: quantities from an IFC model, CPT and probe data, a work plan for a culvert.
