Soil Lab Data from Scanned Reports, Saddle Hollow, Michigan

3,519 of 3,536 soil results from 52 scanned pages with no text layer are in the master file, each with its report, page and review status. The independent second read corrected 38 results, 1,008 as-received results were converted to dry weight, and 17 cells could not be read.

Summary

Second read

38 results corrected; lead in SB-14 above nonresidential DC

The independent second read changed 38 of 3,519 entered results. Three changes move a result across a criterion: lead in SB-14 (2–4 ft) goes from 140 to 1,400 mg/kg and lead in SB-12 (0–2 ft) from 87 to 870 mg/kg (1996, pp. 6–7), and arsenic in SB-20 drops from 97 to 9.7 mg/kg after a missed decimal point.

Action: check any earlier data summaries built from the same 1996 report.

Wet weight

2001 results were as received; 12 change class on a dry basis

The 2001 reports give 1,008 metals results on an as-received basis. Converted with each sample’s percent solids, 12 arsenic results move above the residential direct contact criterion of 7.6 mg/kg; B-234 (4–6 ft) goes from 7.6 to 9.3 mg/kg (2001, p. 17).

Action: compare results between years on a dry weight basis only.

Illegible

17 cells could not be read and are left blank

11 of them are on pages 14–16 of the 1996 report, where a copier shadow covers mercury, nickel and zinc for SB-28, SB-30 and SB-32. The other six are stains, folds and handwritten changes in the 2001 and 2004 reports.

Action: request the original lab reports from the lab or the property owner’s files.

Scans and master file

Pick a report and a page. The scan sits next to the master file rows from that page. Select a result on either side to see its source, both reads, any conversion and the screening criteria. The list below the table collects every exception across the three reports.

    Method

    1. Pages were sorted by report and page number. Column and row headings (sample ID, depth, analyte, units) were read on each page and mapped to the master file columns. The 1996 and 2001 reports list samples in columns; they were transposed to rows.
    2. Each result was entered with its report, page, row and column as the source.
    3. Every result was read a second time, independently of the first read. Where the two reads differed, the value was settled against the scan at high magnification and the reason was logged.
    4. As-received results (2001) were converted to dry weight with the sample’s percent solids: dry = as received ÷ (percent solids/100), rounded to two significant figures.
    5. Non-detects were entered with a less-than sign and the reporting limit. Cells that could not be read were left blank with status Illegible.
    6. Arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury were screened against the Part 201 generic residential and nonresidential direct contact (DC) criteria.

    Assumptions and limitations

    • Illegible results are not estimated or interpolated.
    • Methods and reporting limits differ between 1996, 2001 and 2004. Results are compared as reported, without adjustment for method differences.
    • Copper, chromium, nickel, zinc and the PAHs from the 2004 PSI are carried in the master file but not screened on this page.
    • Screening covers direct contact only. Other exposure pathways, statewide default background levels and site-specific criteria are not evaluated, and the screening is not a Part 201 compliance determination.
    • Depths are in feet below ground surface as reported.
    • The SW-846 method editions printed on the reports (6010A, 6010B, 7471A and 8270C SIM) are taken as printed. They have not been checked against EPA’s SW-846 update history; the project chemist should confirm them if method comparability matters.
    • The Part 201 criteria are those in effect since December 2013. Senate Bill 385 (2025) would change how Michigan updates them if enacted, so check with EGLE that the criteria are current before the screening is relied on.
