Interdisciplinary review of Design Package 2, SR 242 underpass in Mesa Flats

All 252 documents in the package were compared item by item across all 28 pairs of document types. The 148 findings are prioritized by when they must be closed: 14 before the interdisciplinary review (IDR), 22 before model freeze and 112 before the 90% submittal.

Summary

Pair matrix · Plan sheets × Cable schedules

A quarter of all findings sit in one document pair

38 of 148 findings are between the cable route plans and the signal cable schedule. 31 share one cause: sheets MSB-SC-612 to MSB-SC-614 (Rev C) renumbered the cables from the 1000 series to the 2000 series, but cable schedule MSB-CS-01 still has the old IDs.

Action: one cable schedule update closes 31 findings.

Vertical clearance · Models × RTM

Clearance under the bridge is 16'-1" in the model; the criterion is 16'-6"

The roadway profile was raised 5 in. in roadway model Rev B. Structures sheet MSB-S-202 is based on Rev A and still shows 16'-6", while the federated model gives 16'-1". RTM item R-2.14 requires at least 16'-6". The ballast mat, the roadway width and the path grade depend on the same decision.

Action: decide on roadway or bridge grade at the IDR.

Priority · Design schedule

14 of 148 findings must be closed before the IDR on Nov 12

The 14 concern interfaces between disciplines, including vertical clearance, utility pole P-12 at Wingwall C, the signal cable crossing under SR 1242 and the crossing warning devices removed in Phase 2. 22 findings change the models and must be closed before model freeze on Nov 19.

The remaining 112 are corrected within each discipline for the 90% submittal on Dec 3.

Findings by document pair, priority and document

The pair matrix shows the number of findings for each pair of document types. Click a cell to see the items that differ, grouped by cause. The action list sorts findings by when they must be closed, and the annotated register shows the comments line by line in the document register.

    Method

    1. The document register was read as the list of what the package should contain. Title blocks were read from the PDF sheets, and file headers, objects and properties from the IFC files.
    2. Each document was split into items with a common key for each document pair, such as sheet number, cable ID, asset ID, pay item or RTM item number.
    3. All 28 pairs of the eight document types were compared item by item. Values in different units or with different rounding were normalized first. Quantities count as a discrepancy when they differ by more than 3%, cable lengths by more than 10%.
    4. Each finding received a color-coded comment, error (red), discrepancy (amber) or question (blue), linked to the register entry that needs to change.
    5. Findings were prioritized against the design schedule: interfaces that need a decision between disciplines before the IDR, changes that affect the models before model freeze, and everything else before the 90% submittal.
    6. Findings with the same cause were grouped, so one action can close several findings.

    Assumptions and limitations

    • Document register Rev 03 and RTM Rev 05 are taken as current.
    • Vertical clearance was measured in the federated model from low chord to the high point of the pavement under the bridge. The track profile is taken as fixed, so added structure depth reduces clearance.
    • Coordinates are NAD83(2011) North Carolina State Plane (FIPS 3200), US survey feet; elevations are NAVD 88. Roadway quantities follow the NCDOT Standard Specifications for Roads and Structures, track and bridge items the project special provisions.
    • Findings in sheet content rely on text and dimensions that can be read from the PDFs. Raster images and scanned sheets were not reviewed.
    • The prioritization is a proposal. Final assignments and dates are set by the design manager.
